Actor Heath Ledger designed the Joker make-up himself, using white clown makeup and cosmetics from a drugstore. According to him since the Joker himself would design and apply it, Ledger should do so as well. Because Ultron was 8-9 feet tall, the 5-foot 10-inch actor James Spader had to wear an antennae-like contraption made out of a thick piece of wire with two red balls attached to the top 3 feet above his head. This was done so that the actors that shared scenes with him would be able to have a reference point for where his eyes would be. The two red balls represented the placement of Ultron's eyes. Actress Elizabeth Olsen stated that this was actually distracting because Spader would be giving an intense performance and out of instinct she would look at him rather than the balls representing his eyes. Much to everyone's amusement, whenever this happened, co-actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson would yell, "Red balls! Look at his balls, Lizzie!" at her in order to get her to look in the right direction.

7. The suit that Iron Man is wearing to fight The Hulk is actually called The Hulk Buster suit and will be appear for the first time on-screen. The Hulkbuster armor has three Arc Reactors on the front, one on the Chest and one on each knee, and four on the back. Excluding the Arc Reactor of the suit worn underneath the Hulkbuster, it's safe to say that it takes seven Arc Reactors just to power the gargantuan suit.

3. In every movie since Iron Man, they tease the death of a character. In Iron Man, after the fight at the end, Tony Stark is presumed dead but turns out alive when the chest reactor lits up. In Thor, Loki floats off into space but lives. In Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America is frozen in ice and presumed dead as well as Bucky Barnes falling to a presumed death. Both return in future Marvel movies. In The Avengers, Agent Coulson is killed by Loki but is brought back in the TV show, Marvels Agents of Shield. In Iron Man 3, Pepper falls to a presumed death but is revealed to be alive. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Nick Fury is believed to be dead but is not. 17. Jon Favreau wanted Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, because he felt the actor's past was right for the part. 16. Tony Stark's computer system is called JARVIS (standing for "Just A Rather Very Intelligent System"). This is a tribute to Edwin Jarvis, Tony Stark's butler. He was changed to an artificial intelligence to avoid comparisons to Batman/Bruce Wayne's butler Alfred Pennyworth.

10. The film had a torturous development process. Stuart Gordon was originally going to direct in 1990 when the rights were held by Universal studios, though nothing came of that. Two years later, it hadn't moved on so Tom Cruise tried to kickstart a production, to the extent of commissioning a script by Stan Lee and Jeff Vintar. Jeffrey Caine then did a polish on the screenplay. Still nothing. In 1999, Quentin Tarantino was approached to see if he could move things along but that too came to nothing. The rights moved to New Line in 2000 with Ted Elliott, Terry Rossio and Tim McCanlies writing a screenplay (this version even featured a cameo by Nick Fury). New Line started talking to Joss Whedon about directing but this didn't pan out. By 2004, Nick Cassavetes was attached as director but when this too failed, the rights reverted back to Marvel Studios.

During the final battle, there was originally going to be a sequence where Tony, in the Iron Man suit, drives an Audi R8 that would crash into Iron Monger's legs then flip over, after which Iron Man would split the car in half and jump out. However, the Audi R8 was so well-built that it refused to flip despite repeated crashes and the roof wouldn't split the way the Director wanted it to because the car's frame was so tough. As a result, the whole final fight sequence was re-written. The filmmakers were so impressed by the toughness of the car that it was decided that the convertible version was to be featured in Iron Man 2 (2010).

3. The final scene, in which Tony reveals to the press that he is Iron Man is a reference to the Avengers Disassembled mini-series. In the mini-series (part 1), which was written by Brian Bendis, Stark, under the influence of Scarlet Witch, revealed himself to be the Secretary of Defense to the entire delegates of the UN, with the exact line spoken in the film.
2. When presented at the movie's end with the cover story by SHIELD Agent Coulson that Iron Man is employed by Tony Stark to act as his bodyguard, Stark dismisses it as "pretty flimsy." In the Iron Man comics, this was precisely the cover that Tony Stark used to protect his identity, until 2002, when Stark went public with his identity as Iron Man.

13. According to the animators at Industrial Light & Magic, the Hulk weighs 3452 lbs, and can exert 14 tons of pressure/inch2. His skin is 10 times as strong as Kevlar. He can move at a top speed of 300 mph and cross 3-4 miles in a single jump.
8. ILM wanted to study a human performing the actions Hulk does in order to create his movements. Initially they tried this using body-builders but found them to be too cumbersome. Instead they settled for personal trainers.

7. According to Ang Lee's DVD commentary, the dogfight scene in the woods was originally envisioned with the Hulk fighting the monster dogs while naked. However, this was thought to be too difficult for a PG-13 movie, and so the Hulk doesn't appear naked until the very end of the fight.

4. This film was rebooted as The Incredible Hulk with the intention of the character fitting within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However as Marvel has the production rights to make a film with the Hulk, Universal Studios still maintains distribution rights to any film starring the character in his own solo film. Thus, The Incredible Hulk was produced by Marvel Studios but Universal distributed it.
3. In April 1997 Joe Johnston was going to direct the film, but dropped out of the project in July of that year to film October Sky (1999). Johnston later directed another Marvel Comics film,Captain America: The First Avenger (2011).

1. A rollercoaster at Universal Studios theme park is based on this movie. This is especially noticeable when entering the cars of the ride. The platform is designed to look like the interior of the underground labs where Bruce Banner is taken to after being drugged. In the movie, after Talbot is killed, the Hulk escapes to a control room that he begins to destroy. General Ross instructs one of the soldiers to light the tunnel to "Show him the way out". This control room and tunnel are the same design used on the rollercoaster, with the tunnel being the accelerating climb that begins the ride.
