The Martian (2015) is an adventure/sci-fi movie directed by Ridley Scott and based on the novel written by Andy Weir. The movie stars Matt Damon, Kate Mara, Jessica Chastain, Sebastian Stan, Sean Bean, Michael Peña, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Jeff Daniels in lead roles.
The Martian (2015) tells the story of Astronaut Mark Watney. He is a member of manned mission to Mars and is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Mark Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only limited supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to survive on Mars and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.

Andy Weir is the writer of the novel (The Martian) on which the movie is based. He first published his book for free on his own site as a blog for fun. Then people asked him to put it in a downloadable form, then people asked him to put it on Amazon for Kindle download which he did at the then min price of $0.99.

14. Real weather conditions on Mars!
The atmospheric pressure on the Martian surface averages 0.087 psi, about 0.6% of Earth’s mean sea level pressure of 14.69 psi. It is so low that a “Fierce storm” as they put it would be something akin to a very light breeze messing up your hair. Due to the low air density sound would not travel like it does on Earth and you would have to stand next to someone and scream for them to hear you, providing you could survive the freezing cold temperature, poisonous atmosphere and lack of pressure.

Originally, actor Matt Damon was concerned that The Martian would be similar to his previous film Interstellar (2014) which also featured him stranded alone on a planet. After sharing his concern to director Ridley Scott, the director reassured him that the two movies are completely different.

To portray NASA in a film, the filmmakers must obtain permission to do so. NASA must also be shown that the filmmakers are taking the subject matter seriously and are representing the truth. 50 pages of the script is NASA material.

10. Story behind filming of The Martian!
About 20 movie sets were constructed over the filming of The Martian (2015). 20 set isn’t many in comparison to other films, but they were much more “technical”. To put that in perspective to other Ridley Scott films, he used 70 sets on Exodus and over 100 sets on American Gangster (2007).
